Going by the name alone, you wouldn't think Mr. Pizza is a Korean brand. After all, you normally wouldn't put "pizza" and "Korean" in the same sentence. But this restaurant is exactly what it sounds like: Your favorite fast food item with a distinctly Asian twist.
Right now, it has hundreds of stores worldwide — including four in the Philippines. Out of these, two are located in Metro Manila. The Greenbelt branch opened in May 2015, followed shortly by the Robinsons Manila branch. In short, it's a relatively new place, but it's garnered enough buzz to warrant this review.
Most of the restaurants in Robinsons are clustered either at the first or fourth floor, so Mr. Pizza is relatively easy to find. If you keep going towards the Maria Orosa Wing on the ground floor, this pizza joint should be right up ahead.
Contrary to what you'd expect from a pizza place, Mr. Pizza feels more like a cafe than a fast food outlet. The place is well-lighted, the area is decked with elegant furniture, and the flat screen TVs play K-pop videos in all their hi-def glory. The kitchen is open, so you can watch chefs toss and craft your pizza to perfection. Basically, you have at least two ways to entertain yourself here while you wait for your order.
(A little background on this particular review: We originally planned to dine in another restaurant that we won't name here. However, as we were given a seat near the kitchen, we didn't exactly have the most comfortable position. Thankfully, that wasn't a problem with Mr. Pizza.)
Out of their offerings, we tried the Mr. Pizza Combo (Php480 for the regular size), the Bulgogi Pizza (Php380 for the regular size), the Mozzarella Sticks (Php230) and the Citron Aide (Php80). You can see samples of the two pizzas pictured above.
Both pizzas were filling. You can eat up to two slices, and feel that you've already had a full meal. (Then again, it probably has something to do with the appetizer, which we'll talk about in a bit.)
Between the two flavors, we honestly preferred the Mr. Pizza Combo. It may be more of a taste issue than anything, but we took to the more tried-and-tested toppings than to the bulgogi (Korean charcoal-grilled beef), which felt as though it was cooked separately from the pizza itself. By the way, you can choose to cap the crust with cheese, or add toppings like meat, corn, peppers, mushrooms, pineapples and potatoes to your pizza.
For our appetizer, we had the Mozzarella Sticks, which come in four pieces.
Lastly, we had the Citron Aide.
Aside from Citron Aide (which sounds like the name of an energy drink), they have the Hallabong Ade and the Aloe Ade. They also serve soda and alcohol for those who prefer more traditional beverages.
Once they take your order, the servers will ask you to wait for 15-20 minutes — a reasonable timeframe for a pizza to be made on the spot. Fortunately, they deliver on time.
And it's not just the food they're prompt with. From the moment you get ushered in, to the second you ask for the bill, they send someone over as fast as they can. Also, they have a 5 percent service charge, so take note of that when deciding how to divvy up your orders!
If you have friends who are adventurous foodies, give this place a shot. It has offerings you won't find anywhere else, making it one of the more Instagram-worthy places around. Also, it's a laidback place to stay, and if your friends also happen to be K-pop fans, they'll love this joint.
However, pickier foodies might have reservations. If you want authentic Korean cuisine — and "authentic" is a relative term — Mr. Pizza's offerings might fall short of expectations. It's possible they had a bad day with the bulgogi at the time we ate, but still.
We have no complaints about the service, though. Based on our visit, they delivered on all counts when attending to their customer's needs. That's more than we can say for many other establishments! Taking all these into account, our rating for the Mr. Pizza-Robinsons Branch is 8.0/10.
